Ernest O. LAWRNECE (1901-1958) Pioneering nuclear physicist who developed the cyclotron (or atom smasher) in 1930 which became the pattern for the smasher at Oak Ridge which produced fuel for the first atom bombs dropped on Japan in 1945. It was with this device that plutonium was first discovered.
