ZONEN Esaias Baitel Bokomotiv Förlags, Stockholm, 1982. First Edition. Quarto 8.75 x 10.75". Hardbound in pictorial wrapped boards, no dust jacket as issued. In Zonen Esaias Baitel has seemingly unlimited access to a group of skinheads living in Paris, and he exploits this access to the fullest by showing us ironically poignant moments in the lives of these seemingly sinister characters. In some images the portraits are so revealing, the subjects so vulnerable, one forgets the typical preconceptions. Baitel masterfully mixes these unexpectedly tender moments with the almost anticipated darker imagery that comes later, for example in one pair of images a mother coos with her baby on a sofa while a swastika hangs ominously above them, in the very next image she helps a man find a vein to shoot-up, while the toddler plays in the back ground. In someone else's careless hands these images would implode under their own irony, but Baitel, who is Jewish, is so fearless in his quest of discovery that he accepts the scenes that unfold before him at face value and without judgment. He so effectively disarms these skinheads by showing them as human beings, that he reveals them not as violent monsters but as damaged people lost in a complicated world hiding behind symbols of hatred. Condition: Near Fine. Black boards show a tiny bit of rubbing, with one tiny area on the front cover where the black has rubbed away, else Fine. Very Scarce book. Please contact with any questions. |
