Ethiopian BIBLE, on Vellum, with 8 Colored Paintings

Bible with 8 original miniatures in vivid colors. 

Ethiopian Psalter, on parchment, 182 x 120 x 54 mm.  iii + 150 folios, top margin 10-17 mm, bottom margin 23-27 mm, fore edge margin 13-17 mm, gutter margin 5-8 mm, folios 1r-134r one column, folios 134r-148r two columns.  In Gə‘əz language and script, 20-23 lines per page.  Mos likely from the nineteenth century.

Folios 1r-148r: Psalter [Dawit].
Folios 1r-115r: Psalms of David.
Folios 115r-127r: Biblical Canticles.
Folios 127r-134r: Song of Songs.
Folios 134r-144r: Praises of Mary [Wəddase Maryam].       

Arranged for the days of the week (Monday, folio 134r; Tuesday, folio 135r; Wednesday, folio 136v; Thursday, folio 138v; Friday, folio 140v; Saturday, folio 142r; Sunday, folio 143r).
Folios 144r-148r: Gate of Light [Anqäêä Bərhan], incomplete.

Folio 61r: Mary Enthroned surrounded by the members of the Trinity.

Folio 150r: Jesus (holding book) before the disciples.

 Decorative designs: folios 1r, 79r (haräg using black and red); many folios employ line of alternating red and black dots as section divider. No rubrication for “God” in the biblical materials (except for folio 1rv, 76r); rubrication for “Mary” in the final two works.

Red yarn sewn into the fore edge of folio 1, 60, and 148 to indicate location of illuminations.  There are a few magical figures in pencil on the inside of the covers and end velum leaves.

The manuscript is bound in wooden covers with vellum spine.  Front cover is broken and repaired with string as usual.  The entire manuscript is place in a leather double-slip case with leather strap.  Manuscript, miniatures, and covers in very good condition.
