Everyday Life in Bible Times: a Volume in the Story of Man Library Prepared by National Geographic Society.
DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 448 pages. Publisher: National Geographic Society; (1967). “Alive – really alive”. Such is the ancient world you enter within these 448 color packed pages. A world alive with the clamor of marketplaces in man’s early cities, where merchants hawk pots, lyres, and melons, and a slave sells for less than the price of a draft animal. Alive with the dust and danger of a caravan as Abraham leads his kin from pagan “Ur of the Chaldees” in quest of a promised land. Alive with the smell of mud and straw as Hebrews make bricks under the last of pharaohs; with the jeers of a Jerusalem mob surging to “the place of the skull” to watch Roman soldiers execute One the ages would call “The Prince of Peace”; with the howl of a tempest that shipwrecks His apostle, Paul.
In the past century the spades of science have brought forth a vast treasure of knowledge illuminating the great historical narratives of the Bible. Kings and conquests known only in its pages sprang to life in texts and monuments throughout the Fertile Crescent. With finds like the clay tablets of ancient Mesopotamia, with stunning bonanzas like the Dead Sea Scrolls of Qumran, scholars have now revived those distant days when hunters and foragers began to turn to farming, develop plow and wheel, cluster their homes in towns, learn to write, make war, and worship.
Now you will walk in those times. You bend your back with a score of Egyptians to drag a 2 1/2 ton block of stone up a ramp for the Great Pyramid of Cheops. You feel a chill of dread with besieged Hebrews as the walls of Lachish tremble under the sledgehammer blows of Assyrian battering rams. You eavesdrop as a Sumerian father of 4,000 years ago asks his teenage son late at night, “where did you go?” – and receives the classic answer, “I did not go anywhere.” Thirteen maps guide your steps; 528 illustrations – 412 in full color – whisk you to these fascinating days. In 130,000 words of text, you look at daily life in the time of towering figures of the Bible.
Dr. Samuel Noah Kramer writes of the Mesopotamia of Abraham’s era, following the dawn time of history. Professor John A. Wilson recreates the might and magnificence of the Egypt Moses deified. Dr. G. Ernest Wright rebuilds the robust kingdom of David and Solomon. Historian H.W.F. Saggs marches with Assyrian and Babylonian armies that laid it waste. Father Roland de Vaux awakens the days when Jesus “went throughout every city and village”. Dr. Emil G. Kraeling evokes the vast Roman Empire Paul traveled. And National Geographic writers and photographers journey in the footsteps of these Biblical figures, seeking sites and scenes that link them to us.
“To believe that there are ruins under a hill, and to find them,” Dr. James B. Pritchard has written, “is one of the thrills of archaeology.” Share that thrill with Dr. Pritchard, excavator of Biblical cities and consultant for this monumental work, and with other explorers as they probe for secrets at the far horizon of history. Peer over Howard Carter’s shoulders as he opens the tomb to Tutankhamun, aglitter with treasure untouched for 33 centuries. Cling by your fingernails to a Persian cliff, copying with Henry Rawlinson a cuneiform inscription that will defy translation for more than a decade, then unlock the secrets of tens of thousands of ancient tablets, from codes of law to odes of love. Watch for vipers as you patiently unearth with archaeologists some of the Bible’s great landmarks: Gibeon, Jericho, Bethel, Babylon, Nineveh – and learn to shake the scorpions out of your boots each morning. “Everyday Life in Bible Times”, proud product of four years of research and preparation, fittingly launches National Geographic’s “Everyday Life” series.
CONDITION:
Inside of book + beige cloth covers are "like new", dustjacket is NOT. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread (surely flipped through once or twice, but clearly never read). I'd guess original owner leafed through it once or twice + then put it on the bookshelf, never to take it down and actually read it. Dustjacket (in new mylar cover) shows considerable edge and corner shelfwear, with a number of small (neatly mended) closed edge tears, a small chip at the bottom edge of the backside of the dustjacket, and a larger (roughly quarter-dollar sized) hole in the middle of the backside of the dustjacket. Dustjacket is otherwise handsome + relatively intact, just shelf worn (it did its job and protected the book). The inside of the book as well as the cloth covers are without qualification, "like new". Satisfaction guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship.

Most of the items I
offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field
of Archaeology for over forty years.
However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern
Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from
various institutions and dealers. Though
I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in
sociology and cultural anthropology.
After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as
well. Aside from my own personal
collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via
purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and
institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East
and in Eastern Europe.
I spend over half of my year out of the United
States, and have spent much of my life
either in India
or Eastern Europe.
In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to
support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg,
as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe
connected with Anthropology and Archaeology.
I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
