Synopsis
As the Civil War approaches, 14-year-old Evvy's responsibilities increase. Her family owns a plantation, and run a well-known academy for boys. When her youngest sister dies, plunging her mother into a spiral of grief, Evvy must assume the duties of running the home and the school. She discovers that her parents have ties to the Underground Railroad, and that her father must have a son to keep the plantation. In Virginia in 1860, on the verge of the Civil War, fourteen-year-old Evvy chafes at the restrictions that her society places on both women and slaves.
