Remarks

:

Rare King Kanishka III Gold Dinar / coin ~ 255 - 275 AD

This Gold Dinar depicts images influenced by Greek, Indian and Chinese travelers. These coins may have purchased fine Chinese silk, paid the Emperor's mercenaries or changed hands in an ancient game of chance. If only they could talk.

History

:

Kushan Empire

Alexander the Great conquered the Hindu Kush region in 329 BC.

The expansion of the Greco-Bactrian Empire into northern India from 180 B.C. established the Indo-Greek Kingdom.

The Kushan dominated the areas of Hindu Kush into Kabul, Gandhara, northern Pakistan and north-western India. They controlled the trade between India, China, Parthia and the Roman Empire. This provided an ideal medium for the further spread of Buddhism. From the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, Buddhism gradually developed in northwestern India and the great Kushan ruler, Kanishka (reigned from 144 – 172 AD), was converted.

Under his influence, Gandhara, a Buddhist settlement, flourished and created a distinctive Greco-Buddhist art form, which affected the arts in Central Asia and eastward in the first four centuries of our era.

Kanishka III reigned from 255 - 275 AD. He was the son of Vasudeva I and the father of Vasudeva II
