Up for your consideration today is a exquisite set of 5 Ryukyuan Lacquerware Sauce Bowls and Chopstick Rests. Bowls measure 5" chopstick rests are 2.75". The bowls are finished with gleaming black and decorated with textured golden dragons and clouds which give these pieces a 3 dimensional effect. 3 of the chopstick rests are also finished with gleaming black and decorated in golden designs and the other 2 are finished in a rust color with golden designs. They are all marked on the bottom. It is made in a set of 5 because 4 is considered an unlucky number. It is thought that Ryukyu lacquerware developed with the sending of tributes to China that began in the 1300s. The core material is made from Okinawan woods such as Deigo, Snowbell and Bean Tree. After the wood has been seasoned it is turned or made up into various items which are then given many coats of natural lacquer applied as undercoats, middle coats and top coats with stages of sanding between each application. A number of decorative techniques are used including an interesting "applique" technique called tsuikin. The tsuikin method of applique is unique to Okinawa but was inspired by the Chinese lacquer technique called tsuishu. Lacquer is mixed with pigments and rolled out into a thin sheet. The sheet is then cut with a small knife and the decoration is applied to the main lacquerware piece. Ryukyu Lacquerware is considered the finest in the world. Each piece is hand carved and lacquered then the details are hand painted. This set is in excellent condition it has never been used and comes in the original box with paper work.
