A fine extraordinary Kukri knife with wooden handle . This traditionally made knife comes with a superb Boars skin sheath, if its not boars skin then another wild mammal with extraordinarily coarse hair? The sheath also has provision at back for I think 1 smaller item- not included here. The knife is classic Gurka shape and remains extremely sharp to this day. The knife would appear to be a traditionally made Nepalese or Northen Indian piece and yet the carved handle and engraved decoration would appear to have a decidedly Western flavour- reminiscent perhaps mostly- of German adornment? For this reason I would speculate the knife to be Made in Nepal or India- and the piece then decorated perhaps some time later- in Europe? I welcome any further contributions or clarification to the debate via email?
This beautiful item is in fine condition as shown- and certainly appears to have good age. No makers marks, total length 41cm (16 inches)
The kukri is designed for chopping and stabbing purposes as a weapon of war, but it can still be used in other household or daily tasks, such as: building or digging a furrow, to cut meat and vegetables, to cut trees etc. It functions as a cross between a knife and an axe. Blades are deflected at an angle of 20° or more, with a thick spine and a single sharp cutting edge; this causes the end section of the blade to strike square on, greatly increasing chopping effectiveness. Handles are made of hardwood or water buffalo horns. Knife has a flared butt that allow better retention in draw cuts and chopping. Traditional design such as ours doesn't have any front guard. Kukris usually have a notch or a pair of adjacent notches (the "kaura" or "cho") at the base of the blade. Various reasons are given for this, both practical and ceremonial: that it makes blood and sap drop off the blade rather than running onto the handle; that it delineates the end of the blade whilst sharpening; that it is a symbol representing the Hindu goddess Kali.
