ABOUT THE ARTIST
As a child, I cannot remember a time that I was not drawing. As an adult, I experimented with water colors, acrylics, oils and pastels. Then around 1999, I discovered quilting and for a few minutes I was a traditional quilter making one or two bed quilts. I soon rebelled with following somebody else's directions and trying to match corners and started making art projects using fabric. I loved the textures that fabrics allowed me which I couldn't achieve with traditional art forms, i.e. oils, acrylics, etc.
My teachers have primarily been books, books and more books and then experimenting with what I'd read in those books. I'm fascinated by surface design so have learned to paint and dye my fabrics as well as manipulating fabric in various ways to achieve the textures I want.
I'm most happy when I can spend my days in my studio surrounded by the chaos of two or three projects in progress, bright fabrics strewn about and more projects chomping to be created. In addition to using fabric in my art pieces, I like the use of objects that add dimension such as yarn, beads, painting with thread, stamping as well as the use of colored pencils, oil pastels, and fiber paint to add depth and dimension.
Quite often I'm inspired by ethnic, environmental or nature themes and like to use fabrics and colors that imply these themes in my work.
I hope that people receive some joy or enjoyment t when they view my art. Designing and creating fiber art makes me happy and it's something that I "must" do.
