F. CARL SMITH LAGUNA BEACH OIL PAINTING ON BOARD

TODAYS ITEM FOR AUCTION IS: an oil painting on board by listed California artist F. Carl Smith. Born in Ohio 1858, studied in Cincinnati, and Paris France. Moved to Pasadena, California in 1917 where he was neighbors with the Benshoff family (Pasadena Architect William A.). Hazel Benshoff became friends with the artist and recieved two paintings, one we sold a few years ago and now this one which has never been sold before.

The scene is of Laguna Beach, California. A coastal community that is the home of the Laguna Beach Art Assn established in 1918 with the help of founding member Frederick Carl Smith. Smith died in California in 1955. We believe this piece dates back to his days spent in Laguna Beach around 1917-1920. Signed lower left corner. It is shown here in a frame that is not original to the painting. Your purchace can include the frame if you like, however we believe the art is fitting something much nicer. It was in another frame at one time of which evidence can be found along the sides of the work extending in 1 inch. There are no repairs. In the lower right quadrant there are two tiny spots that have flecks of paint missing. From the back you can see some edge wear not extending more than 1/4 - 1/2 inch and only seen from the back. The board also has a slight bow. Dimensions are 23 5/8 x 18 inches.
