Fabolous may take great delight in presenting the seamier side of ghetto life and street thuggery, but there's more to him than that. On his debut album GHETTO FABOLOUS, the wily rapper injects his performances with enough subtlety to keep from sounding monochromatic; he never harangues the listener with nonstop shouting like so many lesser gangsta practitioners might. In addition, the production (partly handled by none other than beatmeister supreme Timbaland) is full of enough memorable hooks and radio-friendly beats to ensnare hip-hop fans who don't usually go for gangsta fare. Most importantly, Fabolous leavens his hardcore tales of "Keepin' it Gangsta" and "The Bad Guy" with a touch of levity, so things never get too heavy-handed. Fabolous manages to keep it real and keep things balanced at the same time; no mean feat in gangsta rap.
Q (12/01, p.130) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...This is a punchy, if brattish, debut..."
