Made in Japan in 1990. (Thanks for the help dating this, Fender Japan!)
Rosewood fretboard over one-piece maple neck, 22 jumbo frets, thin-ish
strat neck and wide strat headstock, painted black with 80s style
Fender logo and HMT in silver paint. Semi-hollow basswood body with
flamed maple veneer. Single f-hole, painted in a very nice vintage
trans-yellow. Very stable Gotoh tuners, graphite nut and bridge saddles
- string thru body. NEVER BROKEN A STRING!! No matter how hard I try -
these bridge saddles are great.
Pickups are two DiMarzio humbuckers - PAF PROs I believe, with coil
split switching and three-way blade selector. The previous owner
installed a second coil-splitting switch to allow both pups to be split
seperately. The new switch also has an 'out-of-phase' mode, so in total
there are 11 pickup variations available on this guitar. Very
versatile!!
All up - a very smart looking and feature-packed instrument.
Sound
:9
A wide variety of sounds can easily be coaxed from this instrument,
ranging from the 'in-between' strat sound (very close indeed), to a
jazzy rounded neck 'bucker tone, to an all-out SG-like screaming lead
sound at the bridge. These pups have a monster output in 'bucker mode!
I mostly play through a '76 Fender Vibrosonic Reverb (Twin with a 15"
speaker) and cover a wide range of musical styles. It's very easy to
get some great fat lead tones out of the neck humbucker through my old
TS-9 - I think this is probably my favourite setting. A simple flick of
the switch and you've got a nice funky rhythm single-coil sound too,
with a noticable volume drop to boot! No need for a pedal boost with
this guitar!
While it doesn't perfectly emulate a Strat or Les Paul, it's convincing
enough in the right settings, and has a bit of a unique sound of its
own. I haven't yet found a musical style that I can't play on this
guitar.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:8
Perfect set up, almost too easy to play, with a nice low action. Build
quality is generall excellent. Only problem is that at some stage the
strip of wood behind the neck has separated slightly in one place,
leaving a slight and barely noticeable rigde about an inch long and
half a millimetre high off the back of the neck around the 5th fret.
Possibly a result of the thin neck and maybe exposure to very hot &
humid conditions where I live. This doesn't bother me when playing it,
and it seems to have settled - hasn't moved in five years now..
Everything else is fine. A very well made instrument and extremely
comfortable to play. Light too (having several hollowed chambers
thoughout).
Reliability/Durability
:10
This has been my main gigging axe since I bought it over five years
ago. I've gigged it pretty hard in that time and I feel I can depend on
it entirely to cover any sound I want. My backup guitar has never been
required.
Finish is lasting fairly well, however I did put some clear plastic
'contact' over the main scratch area to help preserve it. I also
swapped the strap buttons for straplocks.
I feel quite comfortable even at the end of a long gig, too, due to its very light weight. A really reliable working guitar!
Customer Support

I emailed Fender Japan to get try and get some idea of when it was
built, and they replied almost immediately with the answer. No other
contact or need for it.
Overall Rating

Been playing seriously for about 12 years now, own a bunch of
reasonably decent equipment, but nothing fancy or 'boutique' - never
had the $$, so I've always been very critical about gear before I buy.
I feel quite lucky to have stumbled upon this guitar, and reckon it's
the best $1000 I've ever spent - I love it and will never part with it.
I've never seen another one like it either. If anybody has - reply
& let me know!!
