The 1880s, 90s and early 1900s were exciting times in the field of ceramic design, and the firm of Thomas Forester & Sons of Longton was in the heat of the moment. Even though I seldom run across one of their pieces, I’m still amazed at the innovative designs, techniques and glazes.

This vase features a maroon bird on one side and a maroon butterfly on the other – both set on a shaded blue ground with lots of gold. It stands 7 ½” tall and is over 6” at the belly.

Since I live within a shout of Cincinnati, Ohio, it’s easy for me to think of the various Ohio potteries as unique in their history of showing at special event fairs, trade shows and galleries around the world. Rookwood Pottery was famous for this. But other firms from all over the world were doing the same thing during the period. (See below)

I ran across this image on the Internet. It is of one of Thomas Forester & Sons displays at a showroom or trade show someplace. They displayed their wares all over England of course, but also in Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Belgium, and even Calcutta in 1883 and New Orleans, Louisiana in 1884.

They used the Phoenix as part of their logo and often included the name of the “line” below. In this case it is “Moorish.” It’s all hand painted, of course.

Here at 341, I have two "Prime Directives:"
First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less. And, I never end auctions early or use BIN.
Second: I don't clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I'll tell you about it.
So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so's you don't forget about it later.

Condition: Excellent with only minor wearing of the gold here and there, mostly at the top rim. There are no chips or cracks – just the anticipated signs of age earned by living on the planet for over 100 years.

Do we detect some of the first baby steps into modern design?

The hunt is on: Round and round the body they fly – both hunter . . .

. . . and prey. I know you’ll love it, especially after you give it the gentle bath it needs.

GOOD LUCK
