FINLANDIA

Finlandia is a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was composed for a patriotic pageant performed to mobilize popular opposition to the revocation of Finnish independence from the government of the Russian Empire.

A recurrent joke with Finland at this time was the renaming of Finlandia at various musical concerts so as to avoid Russian censorship. Titles under which the piece masqueraded were numerous, a famous flippant example being “Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring”.

Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people. But towards the end, a calm comes over the orchestra, and the serenely melodic, Finlandia Hymn is head. Often incorrectly cited as a traditional folk melody, the Hymn section is of Sibelius’ own creation.

Sibelius later reworked the Finlandia Hymn into a stand-alone piece. This hymn, with word written in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, is one of the most important national songs of Finland (though Maame is the national anthem). With different words, it is also sung as a Christian hymn (Be still, My Soul), and was the national anthem of the short-lived African state of Biafra (Land of the Rising Sun).

The 1990 film Die Hard 2 ends with Finlandia, certainly influenced by the movie’s director, Renny Harlin, who is Finnish.

Domestic Shipping:  Shipping will be $6.00 through USPS Priority Mail and will be added to the final auction price.  If additional pieces of sheet music are ordered through our Ebay store the highest initial shipping cost will be charged and each additional item will only be charged an $1.50 per item. 

Pelican Music will not charge more than $10.00 for total shipping on multiple sheet music purchases.  However, the order must not be larger than what can fit in the standard USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box.

International Shipping:  For international shipping Global Priority Mail is utilized.  We will ship only to countries where this service is available. 

• Canada/Mexico:   $16.00 for the first piece of music and $3.00 for each additional piece of sheet music.  Pelican Music will not charge more than $25.00 for total shipping on multiple sheet music purchases.  However, the order must not be larger than what can fit in the standard USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box.

• United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France and many other European countries:  $21.00 for the first piece of music and $4.00 for each additional piece of sheet music.  Pelican Music will not charge more than $40.00 for total shipping on multiple sheet music purchases.  However, the order must not be larger than what can fit in the standard USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box.

• Japan, China, Australia:  $23.00 for the first piece of music and $5.00 for each additional piece of sheet music.  Pelican Music will not charge more than $40.00 for total shipping on multiple sheet music purchases.  However, the order must not be larger than what can fit in the standard USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box. 

DUTY TAX (Customs Fee):  Customers outside the United States are responsible for any customs fees and brokerage charges for importing goods UPON DELIVERY - Check with your local tax agency for further information.  Customs documentation WILL be marked as merchandise with the value declared as amount paid for the item(s).
