FLINT ROD FIRE STARTER
AND FIRE PISTON
Up for auction is a Cerro Ferium fire steel flint rod and a small knife used to create a spark. The knife has a cerrated edge, used to throw a nice spark. The flint rod is 1/4 inch in diameter, and 2.5 inches long. Used properly the rod will produce a 3000+ degree spark. This size rod will last a lifetime, and works great in wet weather I assemble these in my spare time. This device and a proper tinder bundle is all you need to start a cozy survival fire.
Also, a custom made aluminum fire piston. I have used flints for years but have been intrigued by the fire piston. I spent a month manufacturing, and testing this thing until I made one that I am confident will work well. The cylinder is made of 7075 aluminum and the rod is made of brass. The bore is reamed to .265 and is smooth so not to damage the o-ring. My fire piston has to be carried in two pieces because it will not de-compress, the o-ring is hand fitted to the bore. You can however use a piece of wax string around the o-ring to let the piston de-compress. The overall lenght is just under 6 inches. It will ignite chaga tinder fungus, and charr cloth quite easily. Each fire piston is tested prior to shipping.
Please specify color of para cord, green, black, blue, tan, or international orange. Otherwise I will ship a random color
If you have any question about the quality of my fire starters, please read my recent feedback on this item.
A little about magnesium
Magnesium is highly over rated. Although it produces a brilliant flame, it is very hard if not impossible to shave a pile of fine magnesium dust in the blowing wind. It is a waste of time and effort. I have been an avid hiker, camper, fisherman, and hunter for 30 years. I have started hundreds of fires with a flint rod, and I NEVER use magnesium. The key to a successful fire is, practice with a flint rod, and proper preperation of a tinder bundle. I add this rant only because it is a waste of money to pay more for a product that supplies a bar of magnesium.
Common dryer lint
This is the secret I have found to starting a fire with a flint rod. everyone has dryer lint, we throw it out every day. You can carry enough dryer lint in a small plastic bag to start a hundred fires, and it does not weigh anything. A small wad of dryer lint about the size of a cotton ball will burn slowly and allow you to build your tinder bundle into a nice coal bed. The internet has a great deal of information on the proper use of a flint rod as well as how to build a good tinder bundle.
Chaga Fungus/Charr Cloth
Chaga Fungus, and Charr Cloth seems to be the tinder that works best in the fire piston. Chaga Fungus is available on the internet, E-bay, or you can find it during you travels in the great outdoors. Char Cloth Can be easily made at home. As with the flint, there is also a great deal of information on the internet about the proper use of a fire piston, Chaga Fungus, and how to make Char Cloth.
