Roosevelt was a pioneer for human rights and continued her activism even after her husband's death. She became a Civil Rights advocate and a prominent author and speaker. In 1943, Roosevelt founded the UN Association of the United States, later became a delegate to the UN General Assembly where she chaired the committee that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. When Roosevelt passed away, UN Ambassador Adlai Stevenson stated she was a person "who would rather light a candle than curse the darkness."
