This is a manufacturer's model of the Fokker 100 in American Airlines livery, only one of approximately 25 models produced.
In the 1980s it was common for airliner manufacturers to give professionally made desk models of their aircraft to senior executives of prospective airline customers, obviously in the airline's livery, in the hopes of influencing a favorable purchase decision. This certainly succeeded, as American Airlines ordered 50 Fokker 100 aircraft, with an option for 50 more, and took delivery of 74, ranging through serial numbers 1134 through 11520 (not all of those serial numbers in that exact sequence, as some within that range were delivered to other customers).
Obviously these models were of the highest quality to reflect favorably on the aircraft itself, and on the bottom right horizontal stabilizer there is a transparent decal which reads "MADE IN HOLLAND by IMC MODELWORKS NIEUW VENNER".
The wingspan of the model is 15 1/2 inches (39 cms), the fuselage length is 18 inches (46 cms), the overall length (nose to horizontal stabilizer tail cone) is 19 1/2 inches (49.5 cms) and height from the bottom of the fuselage to the top of the fin is 3 7/8 inches 9.8 cms). On its stand the height to the top of the fin is 8 3/4 inches (22.5 cms). (The top of the stand has two vertical pins which slide into small holes in the bottom of the fuselage, so it can easily be mounted/dismounted without tools.)
The model is cast in some type of heavy plastic which has the feel of metal, and weighs 1 pound, 13 0z ( 0.81 kilos), and the stand weighs 8 oz ( .22 kilos).
NOTE: THE VERTICAL STABILIZER HAS BEEN BROKEN BUT REPAIRED. (SEE CLOSE UP PHOTO) ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT TOO NOTICEABLE, THE BUYER MIGHT WANT TO HAVE IT TOUCHED UP FURTHER SO IT COULD NOT BE SEEN AT ALL. ALSO, THERE IS A 1/2 BY 1 /8 INCH (18 BY 4 MM) SCRATCH IN THE PAINT ALONG THE TOP OF THE MOST FORWARD EDGE OF THE FIN REVEALING THE DARKER SHADE OF GREY OF THE ACTUAL MODEL MATERIAL.
The scale of this model is 1/70, a larger scale than commonly used by Fokker (and other) manufacturers. (Perhaps as a special inducement to American Airlines, as they were such a large and important potential customer.) Thus it is believed only about 25 of this scale were produced, and subsequently a larger number of Fokker 100 models in American livery (in a smaller scale) was distributed to others. Thus this model in this scale is that much rarer.
The model will be shipped in its own manufacturer's box with which it came with Fokker 100 printed on both sides. (see picture) However, the box has been damaged moderately (end pieces have been folded so it does offer proper protection) and so all will be wrapped carefully in still another box. This shipping box will weigh approximately 5 pounds (2.2 kilos).
International bidders e-mail for Shipping and Handling costs and specify if insurance is desired.
This is the opportunity to acquire a very rare manufacturer's model of one of the largest orders ever received by Fokker, one of the longest enduring airliner producers. You can't let this get away!!
