Album notes
Foreigner: Ian McDonald (vocals, guitar, reeds, keyboards); Mick Jones (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Jeff Jacobs (vocals, keyboards); Ed Gagliardi, Rick Wills, Bruce Turgon (vocals, bass); Dennis Elliott (vocals, drums); Lou Gramm (vocals, percussion); Johnny Edwards (vocals); Al Greenwood (keyboards, synthesizer). Compilation producers: Mick Jones, Lou Gramm, David McLees. Includes a 50 page booklet with liner notes by Jerry McCulley. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (DigiPrep). Dubbed "corporate rock" by highbrow critics caught off guard by the band's abrupt multi-platinum success, Foreigner ignored these jeers and scored 16 Top 30 hits between 1977 and 1988. Founded by former Johnny Hallyday music director and Spooky Tooth guitarist Mick Jones, Foreigner started out as a sextet that included King Crimson's Ian MacDonald and American singer Lou Gramm. With the band's self-titled 1977 debut, Foreigner started appearing regularly on the charts with a mixture of guitar-driven numbers ("Hot Blooded," "Feels Like The First Time"), lighter-worthy power ballads ("Waiting For A Girl Like You") and electrifying arena rock ("Juke Box Hero," "Blue Morning, Blue Day"). Along the way, Jones and Gramm pared the band down to a quartet and started working with outside collaborators including Junior Walker ("Urgent"), Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins ("I Don't Want To Live Without You") and Jennifer Holiday with the New Jersey Mass Choir ("I Want To Know What Love Is"). Supplementing the wealth of hits on this 2-CD anthology are various tracks from the non-Foreigner canon of Lou Gramm and Mick Jones (with and without Spooky Tooth).
