HISTORY
In 1983, the Formica Company initiated a competition of leading architects and designers to illustrate the properties of a new material Colorcore. Frank O. Gehry elected to create a lamp that would emphasize the translucency of the laminate's integral coloration. The discovery of splintered patterns came after several failed attempts at a design in which one lamp was accidentally broken. Gehry translated the scalelike pattern of the jagged pieces into fish and snake forms.
After display at the Formica Exhibition the Frank Gehry Fish Lamp proved so popular that requests soon came in from all over to produce more lamps. Over the next three years (1984 - 1986) approximately three dozen Fish and Snake Lamps were made by New City Editions.
