Fresnel lenses are most often used in light gathering applications, such as condenser systems or emitter/detector setups. Fresnel lenses can also be used as magnifiers or projection lenses. This Lens is also great for the fine print in books, magazines, maps, telephone directories, recipes, etc. This can really be a great and creative gift to children as a toy and senior people who need visual aid.

Don't be fooled by 6x or 3x lenses. The real properties of a Fresnel lens are the size and focal length. If you wanna buy/bid a Fresnel lens, ask for the size and focal length in advance. Some auctions here in eBay claim that they have X times Fresnel lenses but they are not telling you the exact focal length and size. For an optical lens, the shorter the focal length, the more power it has. The larger the lens, the brighter the image. For a page size Fresnel lens, it is impossible to fabricate lens with focal length less than 30cm (almost 1 foot). If you got a Fresnel lens, you can check the focal length of it by focusing the sun light.

Solar Applications

This Fresnel lens is also very good for experiments of gathering solar energy. Thanks for its large size, it usually can start a fire within 2 seconds in a normal sunny day. I personally can use it to start melting an aluminium can around 45 seconds under Florida sunshine. Try it your ways to boil a bottle of water, start a camp fire, or build a water heat pipe, etc. I guarantee that you have a lot fun!
