After the Cival War, federal law did not provide for the burial or marking of
graves for Confederate soldiers who died in the North. At the turn of the century,
however, Confederate veterans's groups convinced the government to pass a statute
that provided for the appropriate markings of these graves. As part of the project,
the government compiled the 665-page register that is now on this Family Archive CD.
