FULL PLATE TINTYPE PHOTO CIVIL WAR OFFICER w/ SWORD. UNION SOLDIER FOLK ART PAINTED TINTYPE, EASTLAKE FRAME. This is one GREAT original 1860s large, full-plate, hand-painted tintype photograph of a Civil War Union officer. The soldier is wearing a full uniform, hat, belt and buckle, long coat, sword and insignia. The buttons, shoulder bars, buckle and sword handle are gold painted. The uniform pants are painted blue and his cheeks and lips are tinted red.
The thick (over 1/4”) multi-piece mat/spandrel has an oval opening of about 7-1/2” X 5-1/2”. It is likely that the photo is about an inch larger in each dimension. The mat and walnut frame are equally impressive. The outer paper mat is tan, with white and brown striping. The inner mat is metal gold-colored leaf over a thick board or wood over mat. The walnut frame is partially ebonized and carved, with gold paint enhanced decoration and metal gold-colored leaf inner edge. The outer dimensions of the frame are approximately 13-1/2” X 11-3/4”. Condition of the photo looks good, with only a few small scratches (see photos). The frame also is very good, with only a small amount of the ebonized finish chipped or worn (again, see photos). All this, and a great folky face to boot.
