Synopsis
In this thoughtful argument on the issue of the separation of church and state, Kathleen Kennedy Townshend writes movingly of the importance of faith and churchgoing in her life while issuing a wake-up call that religion in America has been politicized. Providing for the common good has long been the goal of American churches, says Townsend, through social justice, kindness, and service to others. Saying that religion in America has been "privatized," Townsend writes that something important has been lost, as mega-congregations pursue political agendas, engage in attack politics, and raise and disburse funds in a corporate manner. She also critiques the Left for too rigidly ignoring religion, a view that she sees as contrary to the ideas of the Founding Fathers. Rather than a "wall" between church and state, Townsend suggest a "window," as politics has always benefited when it is informed by belief. Finally, she offers examples of congregations that perform good works and pursue social justice.
