Win Vista Compatibility: Vista itself provides a compatibility mode that tries to fool applications into thinking that they are running in a previous version of Windows.
Right click the short-cut to a program in Vista, then click Properties Compatibility, check the Compatibility mode box, and select "Windows XP" or others in the list.
The compatibility tab also enables you turn off new Vista Aero features just for a specific application. You can choose to "run this program as an Administrator' - it isn't recommended (for security reasons), but it might be all you need to fix any compatibility issues.
It's probably best to discover these issues before you upgrade, which why MS is releasing the Windows Application Compatibility toolkit

This kit should help with problematic programs and offer fixes to get them running in Vista. Other than these solutions, you may also consider dual boot, virtual PC solution (free, Vista feature), on the Internet you may find sevral web sites, forums etc...
