approximately 8" long by 6" wide. |

Medium:
mini quilt art collage; fabrics were
stitched to a layered foundation of cotton fabric
and quilt batting. Appliquéd with rayon
threads. Hand colored fabric with textile ink
markers and metallic colored pencils. Embellished
with 4 gemstone beads.

Asian
Influences & Inspiration |
|
| Many
of the textile collages I create are inspired
by the Asian art displayed in tokonomas
alcoves. Tokonomas were the sacred center
of a traditional Japanese home, and reserved
for treasured items like scrolls or calligraphy,
beautiful kimonos, ikebana flower arrangements,
miniature bonsai trees, and fine ceramics
for tea ceremonies. The items displayed
were changed for special occasions, according
to the season, or to create different settings
and atmospheres. |

| The
butterfly's metamorphosis from a caterpillar
and emergence from it's chrysalis symbolize
rebirth and resurrection. To the Chinese
and Japanese the butterfly is a sign of
both immortality and joy. In
Chinese art, butterflies combined with
plum blossoms symbolize long life. |

these gemstones in a container labeled
rhyolite. From my internet research
on rhyolite, these seem much more rust
than the typical pink shades of rhyolite.
I found the color more closely resemble
autumn jasper, but the pattern does
not. Is a mystery. |

improvisational collage style of composing
allows me the freedom to explore and
discover unexpected evolutions of the
content and meaning behind the metaphorical
imagery.
While
the metaphoric images have specific
meaning to me, they are also enigmatic
in that the viewer can bring their own
personal experience to their interpretation.
A
full-time studio artist, instructor
and lecturer since 1994, Linda’s art
has been exhibited and collected internationally
