FINE VANUATU PENTECOST CHUBWAN MASK. EARLY 20TH CENTURY.
Originating from the island of Pentecost in north central Vanuatu, offered is a particularly striking chubwan mask of refined and angular form. The mask is quite large measuring 20 1/2 inches (52 cm.) from the bottom of the handle to the top of the mask. The mask was field collected prior to 1955 and has remained in an important European collection of Vanuatu artifacts since that time. The mask likely predates this time of collection by a decade or more. The holes for the eyes and nose were produced with a coral drill. The surface of the mask has a typical smoke encrusted blackened patina and there are regions of glossy wear. A fine museum mount crafted from exotic bubinga hardwood is included.
