Up for auction is a Fire Starting kit with newly added handles and lanyard.designed for use for everybody from the hearty survivalist, camper/hiker and Scout to the everyday cool gadget collector
I have researched and tried many of the kits and fire starting techniques out there and used that to compile these kits for my own personal use and auction. These kits are made of materials that will work in everyday controlled circumstances to the most extreme where you life may depend on them.
Each kit will contain the following.
- A heavy duty hand sewn cow hide pouch (It’s not a Gucci but very durable). With tie straps. Dimensions are Approx. 2.5 X 4 inches. Small enough to pack away and not be cumbersome and it keeps everything in one place for you.
- A large Ferro-cerium rod (Flint) Approx. 7mm X 63mm or ¼ in. X 2.5 in. Approx. 2 1/8 inch showing outside of the hard wood handle. Also they will sport a long lanyard that you can customize if you like. These will throw of a large stream of sparks at up 3000+ degrees F. They work just as well wet as dry.
- A generous bar of AZ31B Magnesium. Magnesium burns very hot and will even dry out damp tinder. These bars may vary a bit in shape from the picture, (due to the stock that is available to me. They will be cut from either ½ in. or ¾ inch thick stock) but the overall size will be the same or larger. I cut them myself. They will measure approx. 3 in. long by ½ in. thick and ¾ to 1 inch wide. Rest assured it is PLENTY to make many many fires. This is larger than most other kits available on ebay. This magnesium is extremely stable for shipping and carrying around and lights readily when shaved. There is no need for "99.9% lab grade" magnesium. Anyone that says this is simply uniformed. Due to overwhelming requests, All Magnesium bars will now have a small hole in them for connecting to the lanyard on the flint.
- A section of hardened hacksaw blade. It works great for shaving the magnesium and striking the flint. The smooth side makes sparks but the saw side makes MEGA sparks. A knife will also work fine.
BONUS
I am throwing in as a bonus 4 small 1.5 X 1.5 inch zip bags of pre shaved Magnesium. I will also include a large Government issue Trioxane bar that is individually securely packaged.
In the 4 small bags of Magnesium, 2 are very fine saw fines and the other 2 has just a bit courser mesh in it. Great for practice or to just keep with the kit. I like to be accustomed with all my gear…Practice makes perfect.
The Trioxane bar is divided into 3 tabs and can be used to heat MREs, water or to use and an easy tinder if you need fire fast. It comes in a re-sealable, waterproof foil packet, just use what you'd like and fold the foil tightly closed.
Stick one of these in you pack, camping gear, glove box or camper. Not only will they make great kits for scouts or the hiker/camper but they may also save your life if you end up in a bad situation outdoors. I found them to be a lot of fun on camp outs, holding contests to see who can make a fire and boil water first…..:)
To Use
1. Gather some tinder (birch, cedar bark and milk weed are my favorite) and small sticks.
2. Take the provided blade (or knife) and scrape of a small pile of magnesium shavings about the size of a quarter or ½ a tablespoon. Be patient, it takes a little time.
3. Place flint near or over the Magnesium shavings on a 45 degree angle and strike with provided blade or knife. Aim the sparks at shavings being careful not to scatter them.
4. Once they spark they will either catch right away or may need you to gently blow on them a couple times.
5. Carefully add your tinder, building up to larger fuel.
Tips
If you are new to this type of fire starter, try something a bit easier to light at first to get your spark aiming down (aiming is the key). Something like tissue paper, dryer lint, milk weed will work great.
This flint also works very well on other tinders such as dry grass, leaves, wood shavings or tissue paper.
Do not look directly at burning Magnesium. It is VERY bright and could cause eye damage. Burning magnesium can also be seen from very far away. This could be a good signal light at night.
If you plan on storing flints for a long time or in a damp place, coat them in clear nail polish to prevent any corrosion.
