                                       We offering a very unique and interesting EMPIRE PERIOD chest of drawers with mirror.. Came from a very very well cared for Lancaster County estate.. The lady was in her late 80's and downsizing going to a supervised facility.. Family tradition holds that this piece was custom made for a ship captain and his wife from New England who traded in teas and spices.. Exact age unknown but believe to be from the very early 1800s referring to construction.. There is a pencil signature on top rail under marble (can't make out) and another signature on next top drawer rail and underneath marble signed, "M Shirk".. CUSTOM COMMISSIONED Superb hand craftsmanship.. Case appears to be made of soft woods/poplar with a thick flame mahogany bookmarked veneer.. Profusely decorated with hand carved bead molding.. Drawers dovetailed front and rear.. Hand chamfored panels.. Original nice shaped with delicate shaft wooden knobs.. Original white veined marble top.. Original oval mirror set in wishbone yoke ending in beautiful carved WHALE'S TAILS held in place with original turned finials (for holding mirror in place).. The swivel mirror wishbone yoke is mounted to top of dresser with hickory dow rod.. The middle top drawer is a dummy drawer to accommodate mounting of mirror.. I would assume the vacant space underneath was a great hiding place for some small treasures.. Side scroll carvings have a sort of fin detail on the inside and DOLPHIN FEET also have fin detail adding considerable interest to the piece.. Note how the scroll cuts are very deep.. MUSEUM QUALITY A great of piece of history in excellent shape.. It is top of the line and no expense spared in the hand craftsmanship.. RARE & FINE.. One of a kind.. Very unusual.. All original rich warm patina finish.. Untouched condition and very well cared for and loved over the decades.. NO APOLOGIES.. I did nothing to this piece - photographed as found..
