These beautiful earrings are made with high quality 92.5 silver and set with lapis stones from the himalayan kingdom of Nepal. The stones are dark blue with flecks of pyrite ore in them. The earrings come inside the pictured marble bowl carved in India. The bowl measures 1" wide. The earrings each measure approximately 5/8" high without including the hanger x 3/8" wide. LAPIS LAZULI : Lapis lazuli is a very porous, deep blue, opaque, semi-precious stone which forms in igneous and volcanic rock. Sometimes called the Armenian Stone, lapis is actually an enduring rock composite of several minerals - calcite, pyrite (the flecks of color that can increase its value), sodalite and the mineral lazurite, where the characteristic dark blue color comes from. Ground-up lapis lazuli was once used as a pigment for oil paintings and it has been used in jewelry all over the globe for centuries. Lapis has been mined in Afghanistan for more than 7,000 years. The Romans believed lapis was an aphrodisiac and during the middle ages it was thought to keep the soul free from error, envy and fear. It symbolizes power, ability, success and wisdom. The name is derived from lapis in Latin and azul which is Aztec for blue. Lapis has a hardness of 5.5 and has a specific gravity of 2.4 to 2.9.
