It all started in 1997 when Joe Floto brought a similar bag back from Tuscany. After countless trips and adventures with it Joe noticed two things – it looks better as it ages and people always ask about it – where did you get that bag? How much was it? Where can I get one? Joe was so pleased with the craftsmanship, durability, and look – that he started Floto Imports to design and make them.

Timeless and sporty, Floto travel bags are handmade in Italy using craft methods passed down from generations of Italians. They are made with full grain Italian calf-skin leather and pop nicely when combined with subtle contrast stitching. The interior of all of our travel bags are lined with rugged 100% Cotton/Denim so your clothes will always unpack smelling fresh.

About Floto Leather:

The finest grade Full Grain Italian Calf-skin leather is used in the production of all Floto bags. The leather is produced at a tannery in Tuscany using all natural vegetable oils. Floto leather is slightly thinner than a belting leather, but thicker than standard luggage leather. It is strong enough for generations of wear and tear, but not too heavy or unwieldy. This is important if you travel alot as you will find that our bags are not too heavy but are extremely durable and will outlast any nylon bag. The type of leather we use and our tanning process ensures that it will look better as it ages.

Leather comes in many different forms and styles. Producing a leather that will withstand the abuse of heavy travel and still look good was a challenge. Our leathers is unique because we tan it with a vegetable dye and then give it a "European Finish". Vegetable dye is a natural dye that produces a vibrant color and is fade resistant. Unlike inferior leathers that are dyed with chemicals, or diesel - vegetable dyes bring out the natural leather smell over time and are better for the environment than hybrid chemical dyes.

Solid Clear Finish vs. European Finish:

A solid clear finish is a constant clear coat film that completely seals off the leather. A European Finish consists of microscopic particles that bond together and form the clear coat protection. This creates a leather that is softer to the touch and breaks in better over time, while at the same time offering good protection against stains.

Design Elements:

Weight - Our duffles and travel bags weigh 4-5 pounds on average. Our garment bags weigh about 6 pounds and our briefs and handbags weigh 2-3 pounds on average.

Shoulder Straps - The shoulder straps on our bags are average length - about 38”.

Sliders/ Feet - All of our travel bags have protective sliders on the bottom - 4 in each corner and 1 in the middle. The Casiani Mini, Venezia Mini, and Ciabatta also have sliders.
