This building was built on a slab foundation and all floors, including the gym, are tile on concrete. All of the classrooms have skylights. This building features a boiler heating system and utilitizes a well for the water system. The water well pump has been removed and will need to be replaced to reestablish water service. The windows are boarded up for protection; however, there are a few cracked / broken windows that need to be fixed. All of the kitchen equipment has been removed. None of the utilities have been used since approximately 1997. The facility is on it's own septic system, which may need to be inspected / certified before being put back to use.

Horse Thief Canyon Reservoir is projected to be built in Hodgeman County approximately 60 miles west of Friend. Located about 90 miles northeast of Friend is the Cedar Bluff Reservoir and State Park. Cedar Bluff Reservoir encompasses 6,900 acres of clear, blue water at conservation pool. 7,300 acres of public wildlife area and 1,000 acres of state park surround the lake. The lakes and parks are well known for hunting, fishing, camping, photography, hiking and other outdoor pursuits. The Friend area is renowned for outstanding hunting and abounds with deer, wild turkeys, quail, pheasants, prairie chickens, waterfowl and other wildlife. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has enrolled 21,213 acres of land in Finney County in the Walk-In Hunting program for 2007. In the Finney, Scott, Lane, Hodgeman, Gray, Haskell, and Kearny Counties, there are 104,670 acres enrolled in the program in 2007. These lands are open to the public for hunting purposes.
