Precambrian stromatolite is the oldest of all fossils, and with much labor (cutting and polishing), it is most beautiful. The banding that commonly appears in stromatolite is a record of the growth patterns of colonies of microorganisms, principally photosynthetic cyanobacteria, but also other Eubacteria and the Archaeans. The colors that are often expressed are the result of the interaction of biological and sedimentary processes, together with subsequent chemistry and mineral exchange. They date back some 4 Billion years, yet some are still growing today around Australia, the Bahamas and Rio de Janeiro.
This pendant is what is called an Intarsia, similar to a Cameo, as it projects above the frame that it's set in, but in a domed formation. This fossil has been carved into a dome and set in a frame of Black Jasper. It looks so elegant when combined with the bronzed Freshwater Pearls, Rainbow Sardonyx beads and Swarovski Light Smoked Amber crystals. It has a floral toggle clasp and is 27" long with an additional 2-1/2" for the pendant, so a total of 29-1/2" long. It would be gorgeous on tan, black, gold, olive/sage green or bronze outfits.
The earrings mirror the necklace with the FW Pearls, Rainbow Sardonyx and Swarovski Lt. Smoked Amber bicone crystals. They have GP leverback hooks with little shell decorations on the front, so you won't lose them and are finished off with little GP free-flying birds. They are 2-3/4" long and just amazing.
It's really fascinating to be able to wear something that has just been made, brand new and have it be 4 Billion years old at the same time!! It's one-of-a-kind and no one will ever have one like it. The last photo is a Stromatolite in it's natural habitat, the warm waters around the reefs.
