For lovers of pure power pop, Fountains of Wayne's 1996 arrival on the scene was a dream come true. Not only did these guys deliver the jangling guitars, stellar vocal harmonies, and jaunty beats that are the genre's hallmarks, but they added a sharply observant lyrical sense equal parts Paul McCartney and Paul Simon. What's more, their broad-reaching musical interests and production skills made them one of the few bands of their ilk to achieve stylistic diversity. Diehard FOW fans maintain that the group never recorded a dud. OUT-OF-STATE PLATES gives a lot of credence to this notion, as the rarities, b-sides, and unreleased tracks collected here are all expertly crafted and played. Highlights include "The Girl I Can't Forget," which details a night of drunken revelry that ends in true love, a surprisingly poignant reading of Ace of Base's Euro-pop hit "Baby One More Time," and the hilariously piercing "California Sex Lawyer." A must for any Fountains of Wayne fan or power-pop enthusiast, OUT-OF-STATE PLATES ranks with the group's best work.
