Here's How it Happened ...
In January of 2005, we sent our US Manager to China, in search of some exotic woods and some parts for our musical instruments. His name is Traktor Topaz.
He met some great people, and visited a number of factories and saw some amazing craftsmanship. And, just by accident, he came in contact with a source of Chinese pearls. Real pearls, not imitation. The real thing.
Traktor brought home pearls for his wife. Most pearl strands you'll find in the USA are 18-25 inches in length. Most pearl strands use pearls 4mm, 5mm, or 6mm in size. (You can get the bigger ones from Tiffany's if you have a few thousand dollars to spare.) Perhaps it's not too surprising that when he gave his wife a set of pearls that was 50 inches long, and built of big pearls that were around 8mm in size ... it was a big hit!

Why the Deal is Fantastic
When you receive your pearls, carry them to some jewelry shop in your town. Ask the folks there to give you a rough idea of their value. (If they try to sell you a 'valuation,' and take your money, hit the next shop! Most jewelry store folks can give you a general idea and it won't cost anything.) Generally, most jewelry stores will value these pearls somethere between $400 (low-ball estimate) up to $800 or more. Occasionally, you will get a higher estimate, because of the larger size and the extra-long length of the strand.
For insurance purposes, you should value them at $1000 or more, because replacement could easily cost that much.
