Excellent clean SIGNED copy of Frank Lloyd Wright's "When Democracy Builds," published in 1945 by the University of Chicago Press, second printing, hardcover with dust jacket, 131 pages. The dust jacket is protected by a removeable mylar wrapper and has some chipping and a chunk missing at the bottom of the spine. The book itself is in like new condition, with ultra clean ochre cloth binding, red decoration, and black lettering. The pages of the book have some age yellowing. This book has 8 pages of black and white designs by Wright of buildings and urban development scenes. The text is quite polemical, striking out - according to the blurb on the dust jacket - at the "absurdities of centralization and its feudal economy. With persuasive brilliance he shows how we can build a real democracy which begins with the individual homes and its acre." Wright finished writing the text at Taliesen in 1944 and much of the book is a reflection on how the democracies will emerge from wartime stresses and strains. The signature of architect Henry Warren appears on the front endpaper. Wright's signature, in a fragile hand, appears on the title page.
