Up for auction is this great lot of 53 books published by The Franklin Library in the early 80s.

These books were manufactured with Leatherette boards, a product designed to give the look of a full leather binding, but produced for the more budget conscious folks in mind. They have gilt lettering and design, full gilt edges on all three corners, decorative endpapers, and, like the full leather editions, use high quality paper, pages that are sewn in rather than glued, and include raised spine bands that give each book that distinctive antique look.

As you can see from the pictures, these books display quite nicely, and give any room that full rich look, at an affordable price.

Always be informed when purchasing books online. Franklin full leather editions have silk endpapers and sewn in silk bookmarks. If the add does not state that the boards are full leather, ask the seller! There is also a "Quarter Bound Leather" series, which, again is a less expensive option to the full leather books. They have leather spines with cloth boards, decorative endpapers and silk bookmark.

Some sellers are simply not aware of the differences in the three types of Franklin book, so, always ask the proper questions prior to bidding.

My preference, as to display, after the full leather, is the leatherettes, and then the quarter bound. But that is simply a matter of taste.

This group of books are in good condition. No markings or owners bookplates. A bit of spotting and scuffing to some of the edges, and a couple of the books with faded lettering.

A great group of books, that display well, at a low low price. You could easily pay over $1,500 for the same amount of full leather books.
