William James, who lived from 1842-1910, was born in New York City, the grandson of an Irish immigrant who have arrived in American penniless, but who eventually amassed a fortune second only to that of John Jacob Astor. Henry Sr., in response to his severe CALVINIST father, was determined to give his own children a very different upbringing. The James household in GREENWICH VILLAGE was a gathering place for reformers, journalists, and editors---a hotbed of intellectual acitivity, with such distinguished guests as HORACE GREELEY, RALPH WALDO EMERSON and others. The James family, including his brother, novelist Henry James, visited EUROPE where the boys learned French and German while their family resided there. At age eighteen, William decided to become an artist and he enrolled under the tutelage of WILLIAM MORRIS HUNT in Newport, Rhode Island. But in 1861, James enolled at HARVARD where he studied chemistry, anatomy and then attended Harvard Medical School, receiving his M.D. in 1869. In his lifetime, James was the acknowledged leader in both PHILOSOPHY and experimental PSYCHOLOGY. His theory of Pragmatism established him as one of the world's most important philosophers and his writings became standard textbooks. "Psychology: Briefer Course" does not read like a dry, scientific treatise. James was highly influenced by Charles Darwin and his book, "The Origin of Species." James became a Harvard Professor in 1872. In 1878, he married ALICE GIBBENS, and they became the parents of five children. James's international reputation was further strengthened by his appointment as GIFFORD LECTURER on Natural Relgion at the University of Edinburgh, 1901-02. As early as 1898, while lecturing at the University of California, he used the term and concept of "pragmatism," to express his philosophic attitude. He taught his last class at Harvard in 1907 and in that same year he delivered his lectures on Pragmatism at Columbia. William James is one of the most celebrated names in Psychology and one of the greatest Harvard Professors. FOLKS, this is a MAGNIFICENT title---EXTREMELY RARE and Out of Print.
