A Fine French Empire Ormolu or gilt bronze and Patinated bronze miniature blackamoor clock. French, circa: 1802-1805. Measuring: 4.75" high by 4" wide.

The clock case holds a watch movement or what is referred to as a fusee movement. In this specific case the watch also has its own case and can be removed and carried with the person or leave within the case to view.

The movement is signed "LEROY A. PARIS". The Bronze case is attributed to Jean-Simon Deverberie(1764-1824).

Literature:

Jean-Simon Deverberie(1764-1824). Drawings and art works by Deverberie are in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. The design of this case reflects the late 18th century interest in 'le bon savage' encouraged by the idyllic representations of Bernadin de Saint-Pierre and de Chateaubriand, and the abolition of slavery by the convention in 1793. The first of French clocks of this style appears to have been 'la negresse' delivered by Furet and Gaudon to Marie Antionette in 1784. A version of which, possibly purchased by the Prince of Whales in 1790, is included in the current exhibition at the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace. Interest in 'La bon savage' was maintained throughout the Empire period despite Napoleon's reintroduction of slavery in 1802.

This Miniature clock is most curious that it depicts Blackamoor youth rather than adult figures. The bottom of the marble plinth shows a signature which looks to be that of "Deverberie" it is worn but some of it can still be viewed.

Lost wax method of bronze casting. Hand chasing and chiseling of the surface. Original patina present and intact. The ormolu is Mercury gilded with both Matt finish and highly burnished areas of highlight. Gilding is original and in tact.

ROBERT L. REESE

Who was Robert L. Reese? Robert was a prominent Artist in the Miami, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia areas. He was a Collector of Museum Quality French Antiques for over 22 years. He was the owner of Robert L. Reese Antiques and Fine Art as well as Ormolu.com which both still exist today.

Robert began showing extraordinary talent at the age of three. He was able to draw figures that appeared to be done by someone much older. His parents fascinated by his remarkable skill along with his passion to create on paper constantly, enrolled him into art school at the age of 4. He continued to have art lessons 4 times a week through age 17. Along with his amazing artistic abilities, Robert's parents discovered that he had an extremely high IQ along with a photographic memory.

He attended the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale where he not only graduated with honors, but took best Portfolio of his graduating class.

He worked in an Art Studio where he had the opportunity to paint for many celebrities. Upon a visit for measurements to a celebrity home, he saw a miniature French clock from the late 1700's. Amazed by its beauty, thus began Robert's lifelong passion to collect rare museum quality pieces. Many pieces from Robert’s private collection can be viewed at www.ormolu.com

In 2005, at the young age of 39, Robert was diagnosed with a rare brain disease. His life ended three short months late. Over the years, many in the field of Antiques had the privilege of experiencing Robert’s great knowledge and passion for collecting things of old. Few had the opportunity to experience his great love, kindness and uncanny sense of humor. Robert left behind two amazing parents that allowed this prodigy child to shine. He left behind a younger brother and younger sister. Their lives would have been much different without him it.
