BIO of the Great Master:
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was born in Coyoacan, Mexico in 1907. In 1925 she was involved in a trolly accident which left her with permanent injuries. In 1929, she married Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. The two were divorced and then later remarried. Throughout her life Frida was a fierce nationalist and a vocal socialist. As a reflection of her beliefs, Frida often wore the indigenous clothing of Mexico. Frida completed 143 paintings during her lifetime, 55 of which are self-portraits. She underwent more than thirty operations in the course of her life, and many of her paintings directly relate to her experiences with physical pain. Many of her self-portaits are among her most famous works. Her works were often classified as surrealist, although she did not like this label. The colors and many of the symbols used in her work are clearly influenced by Mexican tradition. Frida Kahlo had a gift for communicating her emotions to the world through painting. She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico as well as by European influences that include Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Her paintings are beautiful, often heartbreaking works, and are uniquely her style.
