If you haven't seen one of our wind spinners before, then you haven't seen the brilliant display that they produce. The angles of cut steel provide several different surfaces for light to reflect from. As the wind spinner rotates, the reflections provide an illusion of the centre image expanding to the outer ring of the wind spinner. As the spinner continues to rotate the reflections continue to pulse causing a 3-D holographic like effect. Most people that view the wind spinners assume they are battery powered because of the light that they emit. However, the light is actually a series of reflections coming in from different angles and reflected out in a sequence of sharp brilliant pulses. The reason for using 400 series 18-gauge, Stainless Steel in the manufacturing of our Wind Spinners is because it is next to impossible to stop a regular cold rolled steel wind spinner from rusting. The problem arises in the laser cutting. Because the laser is such an accurate and precise machine when it comes to cutting stees to cutting steel, it leaves very sharp edges wherever it cuts. When the spinner is sprayed with powder coating and put in a 400oven to bake, the powder coating on the wind spinner shrinks a little. When this happens, it leaves microscopic cracks along the sharp edges of the wind spinner. Its kind of like trying to keep paint on the sharp edge of a knife. Then, when dew or rain hangs on the spinner, the water seeps into the microscopic cracks and starts rusting underneath the paint thus causing the paint to start falling off.  Another factor affecting the rusting of a wind spinner is the thickness of the steel, the heavier the gauge, the less the problem. The lighter the gauge of steel (higher gauge number) of the wind spinner, the sooner it will rust. Thats because the thinner the metal, the sharper the edge left by the laser, and the more cracks are left after the shrinking process. Some manufacturers tell you to spray their spinners with a polyurethane clear coat spray to keep it from rusting. This will work if you spray it every year, and get the whole spinner sprayed well. The main problems with spraying a wind spinner with polyurethane are: 1) You have to do it 2) It dulls the brightness 3) You have to remember to do it every year Q.
