1) GEM REFRACTOMETER with Built-in Light Source and Index Oil (GR-701):

The GR-701, commonly known as Gemstone Refractometer, is the primary and most powerful tool in identifying and authenticating polished precious and semiprecious gemstones and also observing the optical properties and the structure of gemstones. This model is just as good as the expensive models used in gemological institutes, it has a built-in light source and with the aid of the Contact liquid (RI Fluid), which creates an optical contact between the glass and the gemstone, you can measure or test the Refractive Index of faceted stones, its transparency or opacity, and its beauty, durability and scarcity.

The refractive index (RI) of a gemstone provides the single most important piece of information to a gemologist seeking to identify an unknown stone. Due to its chemical composition and crystallization structure, each gem has a typical refractive index. In fact, you can also use this tool to measure R.I. for many minerals in crystal form as long as the crystals have a flat and polished face. Through these parameters, you can determine whether the gem is a Single Refraction (Isotropic) or Double Refraction (Anisotropic or Birefringence).

Operating Information:

  • Open the upper cover then wash the gem and prism with alcohol.
  • Lay the instrument on the worktable. Drop a little bit of special refractive oil onto the surface of prism and press it by a thin glass bar. (Be sure not too much or too little)
  • Make sure the ground surface of gem to be measured is close to the prism, press it again lightly, let the refractive oil be evenly distributed between the two surfaces then close the upper cover.
  • Press the light momentary switch, make sure that the internal light source is turned on when testing.
  • Move the eyepiece up and down and adjust the diopter accordingly. By this time you can see a light/dark boundary in the viewing field. The gradation (shade) on which the boundary located is called the refractive index of gem.

  • MEASURING METHODS:
    • Remove the polarizer. Turn it onto eyepiece. Then turn the polarizer lightly. You can only read the refractive index value in one direction at a time because the polarizer only allows the light vibrated in one direction to pass through.
    • Turn the polarizer through 90°, you can measure the refractive index value of the light vibrated at right angles to that mentioned above.
    • Turn the gem in the same direction through small degree then turn the polarizer lightly according to above method, you can read the two refractive index values of the light vibrated at right angles to each other.
    • Operate continuously until the gem is at 180° position to its initial position. From a number of groups of measured refractive index values you can find the maximum and minimum refractive index. The difference between the two values is the birefringence of gem.

Maintenance:

  • After measurement, remove any dirt from the refractometer's housing (casing) then clean the prism and the gem with alcohol to remove the refractive oil on it.
  • Put back the refractometer into the box for protection.
  • Remove the Battery from the Battery compartment if you are planning on not using the Refractometer for a long period of time to prevent leaks or molds that can damage your device.

This diamond selector doesn't react on stones like fake crystals, or simulants such as cubic zirconium, when the probe touches the surface. It is the easiest answer for the vast majority of retail jewelers, pawn brokers and chain stores when faced with the decision of which diamond selector to buy. Why? Operating Information :

PREPARATION

  • Insert 6F22 9V battery into tester. Move the Slide Switch to Diamond and the Power Light will light up in red, wait for about 25 seconds for testing probe to be heated, the Ready Light will light up in green. At this time, please make sure the LED level meter first bar is lighted if not, just adjust the Level Meter Volume to set the first bar lighted, then it¡¦s ready for testing.

    TESTING

  • Use gem cloth to do normal cleaning work on stones to be tested.
  • For mounted jewelry, please hold the jewelry with one hand while the other hand is holding the diamond selector keeping at least one finger touching the Electricity Conductive Panel of the diamond selector then gently apply the testing probe to the stone to be tested perpendicularly.
  • For loose stone, stone should be placed on loose stone testing platform. Hold the testing platform on one hand while the other hand is holding the diamond selector keeping at least one finger touching the Electricity Conductive Panel of the diamond selector then gently apply the testing probe to the stone to be tested perpendicularly.
  • If LED lights up to red zone with three periodic beep sound, then the stone that is being tested is a diamond. If a simulant, all LED bars don¡¦t light up or it lights up to the green or yellow zone only (it varies from different models of simulant). And a continuous beeping sound will be heard if the probe touches the metal part of the object to be tested such as rings and earrings.
  • Recommended testing environment temperature is from 18°C to 30°C. Stone temperature should be the same as environment temperature. Environment temperature exceeding to 35°C will cause incorrect testing results.
  • Replace battery immediately as soon as red light dims.
  • When testing small stones (like 10pt below), it is recommended to take off the diamond from body and let them cool down to room temperature (from 18°C to 30°C) before conducting a test. Small stones attached to human body have higher temperature which causes incorrect results when put on test.
  • To test the fluorescent reaction of stones under ultraviolet light, move the Slide Switch to Ultraviolet to light up the ultraviolet LED.
  • AC adaptor (110V-240V, DC 9V) is recommended (not included) for long time indoor operation.
  • Always set the Slide Switch to OFF position after every use.
  • It doesn't need to be calibrated when testing stones with sizes over 5pt.
  • Adjust the Level Meter Volume to add lighted columns in LED level meter bars to meet special needs when testing stones with sizes less than 5pt.

  • Clean your stone before testing - grease and other dirt can give inaccurate test results
  • Hold the probe of the tester upright, when touching the surface of the stones
  • Once the Probe is warmed and the temperature is set or fixed, the Ready Lamp automatically lights up
  • Always slide switch to OFF after use
  • A new battery replacement is needed as soon as red light dims or doesn't light up
  • Keep the probe tip clean and always place the protective cover over the probe when not in use to prevent inaccurate results

3) Moissanite Tester with Ultraviolet Light (JEM-III):

JEM-III is a sure way to tell the difference between diamonds and moissanite (man made diamonds). This tester will leave you in no doubt as to the nature of your stones. It is a "touch and tell you" device that utilizes the moissanite feature, the different electrical conductivity from diamond. It effectively and quickly distinguishes moissanite from diamond. With the addition of the Ultraviolet (UV) light you can now test the fluorescent reaction of stones.

There are some diamonds in the market these days which the diamond selector detects even if the diamond is not the genuine one.  Have the JEM-III moissanite tester and be protected from the diamond simulant like moissanite!

    TESTING

  • For loose stone, stone should be placed on loose stone testing platform. Hold the testing platform on one hand while the other hand is holding the moissanite tester keeping at least one finger touching the Electricity Conductive Panel of the moissanite tester then gently apply the testing probe to the stone to be tested perpendicularly. For large size stones, do the testing on the top and bottom or front and back of the stone to be tested to get a more accurate reading.
  • If all LED bars in the Indication Window lights up with continues beeping sound, the stone being tested is a moissanite. The JEM-III will not give a beeping sound if the stone that is being tested is a diamond. And if the probe touches the metal part of object being tested, the LED bars in the Indication Window might light up and continuous beeping sound might also be heard.
  • To test the fluorescent reaction of stones under ultraviolet light, move the Slide Switch to Ultraviolet to light up the ultraviolet LED.
  • Always set the Slide Switch to OFF position after every use.
