arno malinowski - back to nature
arno malinowski (1899-1976) belongs to the middle generation of georg jensen artists malinowski was educated at the royal danish academy of fine arts as a sculptor and engraver and worked for the jensen firm from 1936 to 1965 he was the creator of the jensen line of rare iron/silver jewelry and objects an economic depression and the onset of world war ii meant a scarcity of sterling silver which slowed down the production of luxury items
malinowski's iron/silver combination of materials was a departure from the traditional materials used for jewelry production it was inspired by the japanese method of mixing metals these pieces of jewelry were made only for a brief period and are very rare
he became well-known for his design of the royal emblem ("kongemaerket") which was designed for his majesty king christian x of denmark and issued by the georg jensen firm to celebrate the king's 70th birthday on september 26 in 1940 this commemorative design was made into several different pieces such as broaches, cuff links, letter openers, and match box holders
in the midst of a period where several georg jensen designs were symptoms of a new modern simplicity, malinowski's creations felt like a revival of sorts of some of the older jensen ideals such as the use of exuberant and rich motifs often inspired by nature malinowski is especially known for his broaches and other jewelry creations with motifs borrowed from nature: birds... fish... deer ...leaves... into the georg jensen tradition malinowski re inserted a swirling elegance that was not afraid of elevation and warmth
