This auction is for a set of three reproduction prints of the drawings that Theodore M. McCarty submitted to the United States Patent Office on June 27, 1957 on behalf of the Gibson company. All three patents were subsequently issued January 7, 1958.
The first Les Paul model guitar had been introduced earlier in the decade in attempt to shake the stodgy reputation that Gibson had developed. It was these three automobile tailfins disguised as guitars, however, that gave notice to the world that Gibson had joined the space-age and was again a design force to be reckoned with!
The Flying V was put into production almost exactly as described in its patent drawing. The Futura was subjected to some minor surgery, re-christened the Explorer, and released at the same time as the V. The history of the third design, the Moderne, is much like the legend of the missing song of Robert Johnson; the original is in doubt but legions of counterfeits are in circulation...
There are three separate patent drawings included in this auction and each will be provided on artist quality, acid-free, 60-pound parchment style paper as shown above.
