The
Golden Age of Illustration
Victorian & Edwardian Illustrations |
|
From
the 1860s to the 1930s, there was a blooming movement
of the illustrator's art in America and England.
During this period notables such as Arthur Rackham and
Charles Dana Gibson, Maxfield Parrish, J.C. Leyendecker
and Fanny Cory, transformed
the art of children's book illustration.
The movement developed from the advances in printing technology
that permitted accurate and inexpensive art, coupled with
a high demand by the public for new graphic illustrations.

J.C. Leyendecker
Born in
Germany, Leyendecker and his family emigrated to America in 1882.
Like many of his contemporaries, he demonstrated early talent
that was nurtured by his parents. Unable to pay for his art education,
Leyendecker apprenticed himself at the age of 15 to J. Manz &
Co., a Chicago engraving house. In the evenings he took art classes
at the Chicago Art Institute. At J. Manz & Co., his talent
quickly grew from errand boy to staff illustrator. At the age
of 19, he was given the job of creating 60 illustrations for a
bible that Manz was to produce. In 1896, he won a Century Magazine
cover competition bringing him national attention. Soon Leyendecker
was doing cover assignments for Collier's and The Saturday Evening
Post, in which he created over 320 Post covers. Leyendecker is
best known for creating 'The Arrow Collar Man', which was the
counterpoint to 'The Gibson Girl'. Leyendecker helped boost sales
to over $32 million per year.
175+
Leyendecker illustrations
include; Celebrated magazine covers for Saturday Evening Post,
The Century Magazine, Collier's Weekly, Success, Scribners and
more.
Fabulous advertisements for Arrow collars and shirts, The House
of Kuppenheimer, Kellogg's corn flakes, Interwoven socks, Ivory
soap and many more.
Also, famous illustrations for recruiting posters and music programs,
book covers and poster ads, sports & war heroes.

Maxfield Parrish
Parrish
was an American illustrator and painter
who was perhaps the most popular commercial artist in the United
States in the first half of the 20th century. The son of an artist,
Parrish was educated at Haverford College, PA., and studied art
at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Drexel Institute
of Art in Philadelphia. He did many posters, magazine covers,
and book and advertising illustrations. By the 1920s he was the
highest paid commercial artist in the nation. Parrish is best
known for his depictions of fantasy landscapes populated by attractive
young women. He used meticulously defined outlines and intricately
detailed natural backgrounds, and his unusual color give his pictures
a dreamlike and idyllic atmosphere.
100+
Parrish illustrations
included from the following books; Dream Days, Poems of Childhood,
A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales, The Knave of Hearts, The Arabian
Nights, The Reluctant Dragon, and more.
Magazine illustrations; Collier's and Harper's Weekly, Scribners
and Century, Ladies' Home Journal, Hearst's Magazine and more.
Full color posters, advertisements and Parrish's best paintings.

Arthur Rackham
Arthur
Rackham is best remembered for his haunting and dreamlike style
that added to the enchantment and fantasy of his children’s
book illustrations, particularly Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm,
which was published in 1900. He won gold medals at Milan (1906)
and Barcelona (1911), and his work was highly popular until World
War I and his only competition was Edmund Dulac.
150+
Rackham's superb
book illustrations; Mother Goose, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
and English Fairy Tales, A Wonder Book, Aeosop's Fables, Brother's
Grimm and many more. Also, many of his black and white vignettes.
A true master at children's book illustration.

Harrison Fisher
Known as
"The Father of a Thousand Girls', Fisher showed an early
interest in drawing. At the age of six he was taught by his landscape
painter father, Hugh Antoine Fisher. Fisher's family moved from
New York to California. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Institute
of Art in San Francisco. At sixteen he began to make drawings
for the San Francisco Call and the Examiner. Fisher returned to
New York and worked as a staff artist for Puck Magazine. Recognized
for his ability to draw beautiful women, the Fisher Girl soon
became a rival of Gibson and Christy. After Puck Magazine he did
covers for Cosmopolitan magazine, for which he was under exclusive
contract. Fisher is also known for his portraits of actresses
and theatrical personalities.
Fisher's
illustrations include over 100
Fisher girls
from various books, magazines and advertisements.
