The
Golden Age of Illustration
Victorian & Edwardian Illustrations |
|
From
the 1860s to the 1930s, there was a blooming movement
of the illustrator's art in America and England. During
this period notables such as Arthur Rackham and Charles
Dana Gibson, Maxfield Parrish, J.C. Leyendecker and Fanny
Cory, transformed
the art of children's book illustration.
The movement developed from the advances in printing technology
that permitted accurate and inexpensive art, coupled with
a high demand by the public for new graphic illustrations.

is best known for his book illustrations for Dante's Inferno,
Don Quixote, The Bible and Divine Comedy. In addition to illustration,

Charles Dana Gibson
Charles
Dana Gibson was born in Roxbury, MA. By age eleven, he was an
apprentice to architect George Post. He also formally trained
at the Art Students League. He is most well known for his illustrations
of beautiful women during the early twentieth century. The women
were refined, aloof and fashionable. Gibson's women characterized
the ideal American lady at the time. So was born "The Gibson
Girl". Gibson later bought Life Magazine and worked as the
editor until the 1930's.
150+
Gibson illustrations
include; Award winning magazine covers for Life and Scribner's,
College Girls, The Century Magazine and Harper's Weekly. Posters
that assisted in the war effort for the Army and Navy. Also, dozens
of his famous Edwardian Gibson Girl illustrations.

Alphonse Mucha
Mucha was
born in Bohemia in 1860 and moved to Paris in 1890 where he became
the star of the poster-art movement under the patronage of Sarah
Bernhardt. After World War I he returned to Czechoslovakia and
became the father of the slavic arts and crafts movement, which
combined elements of Art Nouveau with classic national themes.
In addition to commercial art, jewelry design, interior decoration,
sculpture and stage design, Mucha experimented with lettering
and calligraphy to produce excellent source material for unique
typefaces. Mucha's style is virtually synonymous with French Art
Nouveau and he is one of the most imitated artists and designers
of all time.
100+
Mucha illustrations
include his amazing poster and advertising art work for Nestles
and biscuits, Carriage Dealers, bicycles, Moet and Chandon champagne
and theater posters for Sarah Bernhardt. Also, Fantasy book illustrations,
Portraits, Expositions, Silverware design and many more subjects.
A wonderful variety of his work.

Coles Phillips
The Fadeaway
Girl was the hallmark of Coles Phillips. Phillips pictured fashionable
young women, using the device of tying the figure into the background
by either color, value or pattern. This approach produced an intriguing
poster-like effect of great simplicity, yet it was based on the
most careful preliminary planning of shapes to carry out the illusion
of the full figure.
When Life Magazine began to use color on its covers in 1908, the
Fadeaway Girl made her initial appearance and was an instant success.
For many years thereafter she appeared in a variety of guises,
but was always the patrician beauty.
130+
Phillip's illustrations
include his fabulous Fadeaway Girls that appeared in Good Housekeeping
and Life Magazines. Advertising illustrations for Palmolive and
Scranton, Community Plate, Carola Phonograph and Oneida, and more.
Additional magazine covers for The Ladies Home Journal, Collier's,
The Saturday Evening Post and Sunday Magazine. His wonderful book
and poster illustrations.

Fanny Cory
Fanny Cory
was born in Waukegan, Illinois in 1877, the youngest of four surviving
children. Although depression devastated her twice, she persevered
and became the mother of three children, passing along her positive
view of the world. Cory was a prolific magazine and book illustrator
from the 1890s until the early 20th century, gracing such
authors' work like L. Frank Baum. Cory also produced a nationally
syndicated single-panel cartoon about the adventures of five-year-old
Sonny and Baby Sister. As a way to relax from the daily comic
routine, Cory began the Fairy Alphabet series.
80
Cory illustrations from the whimsical Mother Goose Tales and The
Madness of Philip books. Fantastical color and b&w illustrations
from the early 1900s.
