GORDON ROSS -1937 NEW JERSEY IMPRESSIONIST OIL - LISTED

NOTE: This work is in excellent condition ( frame shape distortion is from my camera lens only ):The oil is beautifully framed in its original 1930s carved gold leafed wood frame: frame size is 27 x 23 inches.

Gordon Ross was born in Scotland in 1873. As a teenager he sailed to San Francisco on a clipper ship where he studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. An accomplished painter, he exhibited his oils at the Bohemian Club between 1897 and 1904. He worked as an illustrator for the San Francisco Chronicle until 1904 before settling in New York City where he became nationally known as a book illustrator, illustrating numerous books including such classics as Great Expectations, The Pickwick Papers and Merry Wives of Windsor, the Rubayat of Omar Khayam, Washington Irving's Sketch Book of Geoffery Crayon, Pony Jungle, and the feminist humor classic, Ladies in Hades.

Highly talented as a book illustrator and watercolorist ( several of his humorous English Fox Hunting watercolors were reproduced as popular prints ), it is for his body Impressionist landscape oils painted in New York and New Jersey in the late 1920s and 1930s that he is most recognized. These thickly painted, soft atmospheric oils are magnificent quintessential examples of early American Impressionism. ( Before settling in New York, Ross also maintained a studio in Montclair, New Jersey. It is possible that this oil is a view on the Possaic River in New Jersey where Ross is known to have painted.).

The last sale in public auction of artworks by Gordon Ross was the sale of two equestrian watercolors of jumping horses that sold at Sotheby's New York on 27 Jan. for $1,800.
