Grace Ennis had a passion for life-and for knitting. She began on bone hairpins when she was five and successfully turned her hobby into a thriving post-war business. From 1948 to 1963, Graphic Knitting Patterns served as a successful and inspirational business model for artists and entrepreneurs everywhere.
Long thought destroyed in a fire, I discovered an unmarked case in 1999 Inside: Grace's master patterns in perfect order, numbered and intact. I have dreamed of making Grace's patterns available once again so that knitters around the world could knit her Christmas Stockings for their friends and family. Now you can purchase your own set of Grace's original Christmas stocking patterns. Enclosed are the following patterns presented in a beautiful presentation envelope complete with all 7 designs. Recently, I was able to put the complete collection of the Grace Ennis Christmas patterns back together into one package. All seven are available for the first time in 45 years.
I found the last pattern with the help from a wonderful lady from Hawaii. That pattern is the Grace Ennis Full Figure Santa Claus pattern 9005C original design from 1954.
I have received letters from people from all over the United States sharing their family history about how mothers, grandmothers, and aunts have knitted Grace's stockings from generation to generation.
This letter came from Joleen of Hawaii , on 8/5/05 and is listed with her permission
Hello,
I came across your site through eBay and I thought I would drop you a line. In 1959 my mother started a family tradition of knitting Christmas stockings complete with the names of our family members. We were the envy of all the neighborhood kids because we had such cool stockings. Not only were they cool, they were big. One of my favorite family photos is my brothers and I in sleeper pajamas trying on our Christmas stockings. My cousins also admired the stocks and eventually my mother knit one for each of her nephews and nieces. Mother continued to knit stockings for all her grandchildren, but had to draw the line at the grand nephews and grand nieces. Our stockings were kept separate from the other Christmas decorations in Mother's cedar chest. It was always such a big part of the pre-Christmas ritual to go and get the stockings. They always had such a distinctive smell from the cedar.
Mother knit at least one hundred in her life time. When my dear mother passed away a couple of years ago she had an entire library of patterns but the ones that the family fought over were the Christmas stocking patterns. I have them by the way, I'm quite proud of that! When I came across those very patterns on the internet and read the story I was very touched as the patterns I have are the original patterns designed by Grace Ennis. I have five patterns and I see only three on your web site. I was wondering if she had others? I would love to have them all. Thanks for taking the time to read about my family remembrances. Isn't it fun how the internet has made the world such a small place.
Aloha from Hawaii,
Joleen Black
P.S. I had promised to share the patterns with my family members if they happen to have more children and need more stockings but now that I know where to get them, they will have to buy their own. I'm keeping mine under lock and key.
I am please to make these wonderful patterns available again, along with the promise of fond recollections, fun times and new memories; I hope you, too, will celebrate the look and appeal of Grace's classic style.
