Historical Perspective: The Grand Army of the Republic organized the veterans of the Union Army who served during the American Civil War. Organized in 1866, the GAR lasted until the death of its last member in the mi-1950s. At its peak in the 1890s, the GAR membership rolls numbered nearly a half-million members. Its political and social significance far outweighed the size of its membership rolls. The GAR carried tremendous influence on politics, most especially amongst the Republican Party. Membership in or endorsement by the GAR carried a great deal of weight in National elections and state or local elections in the North. That influence lasted well into the twentieth century. Their organization influenced the creation of the U. S. Department of Veteran Affairs and served as a model for almost every veterans organization created since. Their designation of “Decoration Day” on May 30 of every year evolved into Memorial Day. Be sure to sign up for our special newsletter "Civil War Buffs Bulletin" sent periodically by e-mail.
