Here is a Root end 2.9 Hocchiku style shakuhachi made from Chinese Madake Bamboo hand picked for me in Zhejiang China around 2002. It is pitched well in F with A=440hz for the experienced player. . This is a CHOUKAN bass flute suited to taller players with medium to large hands. The finger hole are larger than the standard 1.8 at 12.5mm - 13mm oval. My Hocchiku instruments are made in the lineage the eccentric Watazumi, the Komuso Monk who coined the term Hocchiku - Darma Bamboo. Watazumi brought the experience of playing the highly refined Zen Honkyokyu music back to it's origins by playing on the most organic yet functional shakuhachi. I studied making Hocchiku under Kinya Sogawa who studied music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. This instrument is carefully crafted with the respect and awareness of this traditional lineage in crafting. All the advanced fingerings work very well into the third octave Ha notes with the tone color and expressive dynamic range expected of this type of shakuhachi. Please know that most shakuhachi teachers in America will require a 1.8 length Modern Jiari shakuhachi to start lessons with. In 2002, I received combined grants from both the Japanese and American governments to live in Japan to specifically study shakuhachi making. I studied crafting under Kinya Sogawa who was a live-in apprentice to Chikusen Tamai, the famous maker who apprenticed Hoshi Bonchiku, Yamaguchi Shugetsu, Tom Deaver and other professional Japanese makers today. Kinya also studied shakuhachi music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. My understanding of making and playing evolves daily.
