ZEN SHAKUHACHI

Welcome to Yung Flutes Shakuhachi, home of Perry Yung, internationally recognized shakuhachi maker supported by both the American and Japanese governments to live and study traditional shakuhachi making and playing in Japan.

"Perry is one of the most creative shakuhachi makers I know. He has spent considerable time studying the basics of construction and his instruments rival some of the best in quality, but from there he takes the shakuhachi to new levels of freedom and, to our great delight, fun." - Chistopher Yohmei Blasdel, Kinko master, author of Shakuhachi: a Learning Manuel and The Single Tone - Tokyo, Japan

Hear the tone color, integrity of tuning and dynamic response for the Dokyoku music of Watazumi.

Please read the entire description clearly. I try my best to represent my shakuhachi instruments accurately to help the informed buyer. Please ask any questions what so ever!

Here is a Root end 3.0 CHIKUSING Model shakuhachi made from Chinese Madake Bamboo hand picked for me in Zhejiang China around 2002. It is pitched well in tune with itself around E. . This is a CHOUKAN bass flute suited to taller players with medium to large hands. The finger hole are larger than the standard 1.8 at 12.5mm - 13mm oval. My Chikusing flutes are essentially Jinashi natural bore flute but has my Spot Tuning Method applied to in the bore to create balance and faster response for the advanced player of Dokyoku Zen music of Watazumi, the eccentric Komuso Monk who brought the experience of the shakuhachi back to it's origins by playing on themost organic flutes possible. I studied making Hocchiku under Kinya Sogawa who studied music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. This instrument is carefully crafted with the respect and awareness of this traditional lineage in crafting. All the advanced fingerings work very well into the third octave Ha notes with the tone color and expressive dynamic range expected of this type of shakuhachi. Please know that most shakuhachi teachers in America will require a 1.8 length Modern Jiari shakuhachi to start lessons with. If you are in New York City or the surrounding area, you can start studying traditional Honkyoku with me on this flute. Feel free contact me directly or see my store for availability. The winner of this auction has my Lifetime Guarantee of customer support and the Best Guarantee in the World. Read about it below. Thanks for looking!

I often receive questions pertaining to the many kinds shakuhachi auctions on eBay, which I am always happy to answer. Please do a little research before you hit the Buy it Now. Education is empowerment.

    About Perry Yung

  • Member of the International Shakuhachi Society
  • Guest moderator for the International Shakuhachi Forum.
  • Recorded shakuhachi sound tracks for Internationally released films, Independent films and PBS documentaries.
  • Recipient of Japan - US Friendship Foundation and International House of Tokyo Artist Grant (National Endowment for the arts).
  • New York Council on the Arts
  • Ear to the Ground - Jerome Robbins Foundation Grant

In 2002, I received combined grants from both the Japanese and American governments to live in Japan to specifically study shakuhachi making. I studied crafting under Kinya Sogawa who was a live-in apprentice to Chikusen Tamai, the famous maker who apprenticed Hoshi Bonchiku, Yamaguchi Shugetsu, Tom Deaver and other professional Japanese makers today. Kinya also studied shakuhachi music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. My understanding of making and playing evolves daily. I see that it will take a lifetime (or more) to master this wonderful and unique instrument. Visit my website at yungflutes for more information on shakuhachi flutes, playing, history, making, and repairs. If you bought a questionable shakuhachi, I will be glad to evaluate it for no charge. I specialize not only in making professional grade shakuhachi, but also repairing and restoring all levels of shakuhachi instruments. It is my extreme pleasure to serve the international shakuhachi community.
